It is now day 7 (or is it day 8!) of docking - which for me now means taking care of the grandchildren from early morning, often until after dinner each night. A much preferable option than docking lambs tails, ear marking, standing out in the wind for 12 hours a day etc etc etc believe me!. I am not complaining, but boy - am I glad to see their parents arrived to pick them up each night! Its - full on - a 20 month old, a 3 year old and outside school hours, a seven year old. But, a very precious time together. How I wish I could have have the chance to build the same bonds with my grandparents that these have with most of theirs.
Today started off well, with happy children, one off to school - then Missy A in a sad little whiny voice.. "I want some lollies..............I want some yummies......"
Which was met with "Darling.. we don't have lollies just after breakfast......we'll make something yummy for morning tea soon....".. and the whining turned close to tears....
" I want some yummies.......lollies.................my tummy hurts.....".. increase in distress and she continues..."I feel sick...."
And she promptly was. All over the floor, the wall, her trackpants, her socks, her hair. All day on and off. Poor little mite. Her mum told me tonight there is a tummy bug going around the children in the district. Great. I have them again tomorrow. Here's hoping the other two don't catch it! To look on the bright side, every single surface in the kitchen, family room and bathroom has been scrubbed and where needed, disinfected tonight, so all is gleaming.
Saturday was a full on day with all three children. While the rest of the family set off out the back of the farm to dock yet another 1000 lambs, I packed up the car (with everything from car seats, buggy, sunblock, sunhats, raincoats, bandaids, Panadol (emergency for moi!), treats, lunch, drinks, spare changes of clothes, wet wipes, blankets, cuddlies etc. What a performance! and how quickly you forget all that most mum's need to have to hand!. No longer will I raise an quiet eyebrow on the odd occasion I spy the - how shall I put it - 'collections of stuff' regularly lying around in the boot and on the floor of DIL's car!!! It is there for a reason!)
We set off to the Masterton Kite Festival. What a brilliant day it was. Not only was the necessary WIND in evidence, but also the sun. The kids loved it. Face painting, kites of all shapes and sizes from lovingly made newspaper kites, traditional kites, very smart shark kites, butterflies, a pirate ship, a huge teddy bear kite. So many.
Of course, the inevitable kite sale tent was there. Master C had his heart set on a shark kite, but at $39.95, he had to settle for a shark face paint. The dearest were close on $90. Far too dear to my mind for a spur of the moment 'treat'. If it is on next year and I can take them again, I think we'll make a kite at home to take with us.
We made a full day of it, moving on to the Park. Masterton has the most wonderful adventure park for children - very safe to play in, a lovely atmosphere. And Mr Whippy parks there on weekends, so it was ice creams all round. Then off to McDonalds for dinner - and - home. While at times I curse living so far out, when it comes to travelling with wee ones, the distance driving is a bonus. It makes for peaceful driving.
Bless them....little angels.
Tomorrow - well, I have my fingers crossed there will be no repeats of todays 'cleaning-up', but I'm not hedging my bets on that one. Chances are it will happen.
However.....it's preferable to the chaos and ickyness of docking right?
A classic on Saturday. Master C had been into Warehouse to buy a birthday present for a friend's birthday party on Sunday. He chose some Pokemon cards. As we were walking towards the exit door, he stopped, looking at me very seriously..."I am feeling very left out. I would like some Pokemon Cards too, then I won't feel so left out..."
(my brothers birthday incidentally - HAPPY BIRTHDAY lil bro - all 6'4" of you!!)
5 months. It has been a loooooong time.
Indeed.
Winter is over now, even though the temperatures today would lead one to believe otherwise. At this rate, I'll need to be thinking about finding more firewood. Or is it that I have gone soft in my old age. All considered though, we were blessed with a mild winter this year. And a short memory. Another blessing.
Winter has confused the garden, that's for sure, with plants flowering most unseasonally. But, no complaints there. Roses blooming all year round - great!. Spring bulbs in the winter - what a treat. The sun shone brilliantly on missy A's 3rd birthday. I can't belive how quickly the grandchildren are growing up. The eldest two are 7 now. Those thoughts make me feel SO old!
While Sydney was 10 degrees warmer than at home, it rained often, but I am used to rain, so no worries there.
Went to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert - and loved it.
Northland - the most wonderful few weeks away. I'll have to hunt for the photos from that trip.
My laptop died - only two years life out of it!! - how's that for a $3000 investment? It's a throw away world for sure! Many people have commented, sure, they don't last long, but hey - each time you buy, they are not only cheaper, but also bigger and faster. Well they might be, and this is - but - I didn't want bigger or faster. Nor do I want to add to the huge e-waste building up worldwide. I was perfectly happy with what I had. But, it wasn't to be. Now I have a new laptop now, have almost finished loading on what I need and am back online once again. And I hope this one last longer than two years!. I do love the new screen though. Clear as a bell!
Sadly though, I have lost many email addresses - so if you want to keep in touch - you know what to do!
Daylight saving hit in this weekend. I am still trying to adjust. Today has flown. Here it is, after 1am, and look at me. Writing on Xanga, with plans to go visit around and say hello, and finish my preparation for a cancer meeting tomorrow. Time for a reality check!
Tomorrow I have been 'ordered' to go view master C's two works of art, an 'order' delivered as subtlely as a 7yr old can - two paintings of his, chosen for the Regional School Art Exhibition at the local Museum/Gallery. He tells me (and he's ever so proud of his accomplishment too I might add) that his two paintings are "on a stand in front of that lady"... as he pointed to this photo online. I'll be in trouble if I can't find them. There's no bluffing with a 7 yr old! Wish me luck!
So, hopefully I will be able to find his work. He told me too he's "going to give you one of them so you can hang it on your wall and it will remind you of me." Isn't he a sweetie? I suspect his mother though might have plans herself for these paintings - and that is - I am sure she would like to see them hanging on her walls!
sadly though, it is time to duck offline, but, be warned - I shall be back.
First, a thank you to all who have kept in contact, your friendship has been much appreciated. I feel bad that I haven't written here for so long. And because it has been so long, it is also hard to start again - if that makes sense. So much has happened - good and not so good.
Race Day has been and gone, a huge success with an estimated crowd of 8000 - a record crowd. Next year we will be prepared!. There have been funerals, and very sadly one more expected any day now. There have been highs, there have been wonderful times with family and friends. Reunions with family living overseas. A family 50th Wedding Anniversary. New friends. Old friends. Health issues, ups and downs, swings and roundabouts. But, that is life.
Today I picked up some road maps from the AA. I have tickets to go see the Fiddler On The Roof in Auckland - can't wait. Fiddler on the Roof was one of my favourite records as a child - and Topol himself is coming out. I can't believe he is still around and performing! Plan to catch up with a couple of friends in Auckland. Friends I haven't met in person yet. We have 'known' each other for about five years now, initially through a message board, then via email. The two of them are both good friends from way back and I am good friend of an old friend of theirs in Wellington. Isn't it a small world!. So will be great to meet up. We are planning a gals night out together. They are about 10 years younger than me so I hope I can keep up!
Then moving on for 10 days or so exploring Northland, an area of NZ I don't know very well at all, parts of which I have never been to. A trip instigated by yet another friend, a couple, again met through a recipe message board a while back now, swopping recipes, sharing ideas etc, "clicking" and eventually building a friendship - but an invitation to come on past Auckland and stay with them was the trigger to go explore. So, yes, I would love to come and stay - especially with the promise of "I will cook you a meal you won't forget"...seeing one of them is a most fabulous Chef... yes..!! Haven't decided where else to go yet through Northland. Will spend some time planning that over the next week or so.
I've been very unsettled in many ways this past while. Life has been full and busy, but I have felt lost at times. Sometimes wondering where I am heading and why. The usual crowd are making their winter escape plans at the moment, but this year, even though they have asked, I have no motivation and haven't made any plans to join them. Perhaps once the colder weather kicks in I might be more motivated.
For now though, it is late, and I must try sleep again.
